Doolittle-Harrison Fellowship
For any travel beginning on and after September 1, 2006, the following revised Doolittle-Harrison guidelines will be in effect. The new application is available at the bottom of the webpage.
AWARD
The Doolittle-Harrison Fellowship awards up to $400 to doctoral students for presentation at a professional academic conference or for short-term travel outside of the contiguous United States to facilitate dissertation research.
Note: Students should apply for departmental and/or divisional funds (i.e., Lichtstern for Anthropology students) for transportation expenses at the same time as applying for the D-H Fellowship; departmental/divisional applications should be submitted directly to the department/division and D-H applications should be submitted directly to the Office of Graduate Affairs (see "Application Process").
ELIGIBILITY
- Applicants must be pursuing a doctoral degree at the University of Chicago in one of the four divisions (Biological Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences), the Divinity School, Public Policy, Social Services Administration, or the GSB;
- Applicants must be in or beyond their 3rd year of Ph.D. work at the time the resources will be used (that is, at least the Fall term of the 3rd year, for most students);
Note: Divinity School students are eligible if they have completed 2 years of Masters work and are in the 1st year or beyond of doctoral work at the U of C; - Students are eligible to hold a D-H award only 1 time during their academic career
APPLICATION PROCESS:
Complete applications must be submitted at least 1 month prior to the dates during which the award will be used. In order to be considered for the award, a student must submit a fully completed application, including:
- application formĀ
- unofficial transcript listing graduate courses and grades; online copies will suffice;
- letter of recommendation from the applicant's advisor or dissertation director;
- statement of no more than 500 words that describes (a) the proposed conference or research trip and (b) its relevance to the applicant's academic program;
- documentation (e.g. invitation letter) of presentation at a conference, if applicable.
Fellowship recipients will receive the Doolittle-Harrison funds as a reimbursement and must submit receipts documenting expenses incurred during travel including boarding pass/ticket stubs, lodging receipts, and proof of conference registration; food receipts are not necessary as the award provides $25 per diem.
