Fulbright Fellowships
There are two Fulbright fellowships that the Office of Graduate Affairs manages and advises on:
- Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship (DDRA)
- Fulbright IIE U.S. Student Program Fellowship
The 10-11 DDRA application will not be available until late summer. Continue to check on availability via the Department of Education's eGrants website. Brooke Noonan will also send an announcement to all prospective applicants who have joined the DDRA listserve. In the meantime, applicants can work on the narrative statement, line up recommenders, and collect required materials. The internal U of C deadline is November 12, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. Contact the DDRA Adviser, Brooke Noonan (brookec@uchicago.edu or 773.702.0871) *right away* if you have not already done so. An appointment with Brooke Noonan is required before application submission.

Fulbright IIE U.S. Student Program Fellowships 
IIE Full Grant: fellowship of 8-12 months for study or research abroad in 1-3 countries; criteria vary widely by country and applicants should review requirements associated with proposed country prior to application; award covers expenses for travel, living, research, insurance, tuition and/or language training (if applicable); applicants can also qualify for concurrent Special Program Grants in selected countries, fields, and languages including the Critical Languages Enhancement Awards and English Teaching Assistantships.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens who hold a B.A. degree at the time of the grant; some countries have requirements regarding foreign language proficiency and/or previous time spent in country.
Application Process: NOTE that October 1, 2009 is the internal deadline by which all hardcopy/electronic materials must be submitted. The University must submit all students' applications along with supplemental materials by the date posted on IIE's site (October 19, 2009) The IIE application is electronic; applicants must follow a 2-part application process by both submitting hard copies of all application materials to the Office of Graduate Affairs and submitting electronically; applicants to Western Europe must also complete a campus interview, partly conducted in relevant foreign language, prior to the October 19 deadline; interviews will be arranged by OGA.
- Statement of Proposed Study: 1-2 pages; explanation of research question, methodology, and project timeline that ensures feasibility within grant period as well as consideration of Fulbright mission .
- Personal Statement: an intellectual biography in narrative form; should provide information not otherwise provided in application and show what makes applicant "tick."
- Letters of Recommendation (x3): recommenders submit letters online and in sealed, signed hard copy.
- Official Transcripts from all post-high school institutions: every course at every institution taken after high school should be included.
- Foreign Language Evaluation Report (if applicable): summary of language study to date; must be interviewed by an instructor who submits form both electronically and in sealed, signed hard copy.
- Letters of Affiliation from host country (if applicable): only hard copies will be accepted; letters can be brief and can come from a variety of institutions (academic, non-governmental, industrial, etc.).
Note: additional materials are required for applicants in the Creative and Performing Arts .
Selection Process: approximately 1,400 grants will be offered worldwide based on applicant's academic record, language preparation, feasibility of proposal, personal qualifications, and desire to serve as a "cultural ambassador" and to advance Fulbright's aim of promoting mutual understanding among nations through engagement in host country; applications evaluated highly by specialists in U.S. will be forwarded to host countries for further review, then ultimately selected by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board; announcements will be made between mid March and late June 2010; U of C has a 35% applicant-to-winner success rate.
