Fulbright Fellowships

Update as of June 8, 2007

There are two Fulbright fellowships that the Office of Graduate Affairs manages and advises on:

The DDRA is a more limited fellowship, and is for students doing dissertation research in non-Western countries. The IIE Fulbright is for any stage of graduate work in almost all countries of the world. If you are an advanced graduate student doing dissertation research in a non-Western country, you are eligible to apply for both Fulbrights. See chart comparing the DDRA and IIE Fulbrights .
Please read the following materials carefully and then schedule a one-on-one or small group advising session to discuss the application and get tips on applying. You can also request to be on a listserve for Fellowship updates. For the DDRA, contact Madeline Hamblin (mw-hamblin@uchicago.edu) and for the IIE, contact Brooke Noonan (brookec@uchicago.edu).

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowships (DDRA)

Update from Madeline Hamblin as of September 10, 2007

The 08-09 DDRA application can now be accessed at the Department of Education's eGrants website . Once on the site, you can register and begin working on your application. The internal U of C deadline has been changed to October 19, 2007.

On or before that date, please submit your electronic application and bring to me (ADM 229) a printout of your entire application (not just the proposal) plus a hard copy of your official graduate transcript(s). You can start and stop as many times as you wish, but be sure to enter right away the names and e-mail addresses of your faculty recommenders and your language evaluator(s) so that they can get their letters and forms submitted. Encourage your recommenders to submit their letters/forms by the October 19 U of C internal deadline. However, if they are unable to do so, they have until October 30 to get in everything. After that date, the application will not be available as I plan to send it to Washington on October 31.

For your budgets, enter in $2,000 for basic insurance (unless you choose a plan different than U of C's--if so, put in whatever that amount is). Also, when figuring out your international travel, remember that you have to fly on American carriers as far as you can go. Figure out what a round trip economy flight is and then add in about 20% to account for increased airfares a year from now.

Handouts: be sure to read the following handouts before starting your Fulbright application and scheduling a one-on-one or small group advising session with Madeline Hamblin (tips anc copies of successful proposals will be provided at the advising session).
